WG3: IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES

WG3 will address the practical implementation of web-based data collection--this means that it has a unifying role for the project in synthesizing the many different methodological issues, ideas and results of the various research activities carried out within this COST Action. Discussion of ethical issues, suggestion of methodological guidelines, simulation of alternative implementation scenarios and interaction/collaboration with those who are responsible for existing online panel/surveys are some of key activities of the WP3 group. WG3 will attend to the development of guidelines, tools and sites for practical implementation, with an eye on the adaptability of innovations and network conclusions to the substantial needs of different scientific fields. Firstly, it will evaluate existing guidelines of professional associations and researchers with regard to conducting web-surveys and collecting web data. For the development of new guidelines and standards, specific case studies/scenarios will be developed and discussed, taking into account not only methodological issues but also cost effectiveness and feasibility. WP3 will also explore the possibilities of outreach activities within Europe and beyond, and consider whether the experiences of institutions already implementing web-based data collection can be applied in institutions where such methodology has not yet been introduced. Secondly, it will concentrate on the specific questions that should be addressed if web-surveys are used as a new option for data collection for existing surveys. Thirdly, this area will evaluate professional/ethical codes and standards in the light of opportunities created by new web-based data collection techniques. Finally, it will ensure the practical implementation of results, openness, flexibility, liaison, and interaction with other research programmes, and communication among web-survey experts, other social scientists, official bodies, and media, communication, marketing and opinion researchers.
