WG2: Innovations in web-based data collection

WG2 will concentrate on the scientific challenges of a wide variety of recent innovations in web-based data collection. For example, the analysis of paradata (e.g. mouse clicks, response times, navigation traces) can be used to inform the researcher of measurement problems in web surveys. No report has yet been published on paradata from large-scale cross-cultural web surveys to inform the scientific community of the relative relevance and similarity of interpretations of paradata. Web-based data collection techniques are already widely used in the behavioural and social sciences, such as web-based tests and experiments, non-reactive data collection (e.g. from web social networks and blogs), and mobile Internet research. The working group will help in the exchange of methodologies and experiences between users of different web-based data collection techniques. Knowledge and experience from a variety of innovations in web technology can potentially contribute to the methodology of web-based data collection, such as: computational linguistics and text analyses; (survey) paradata analysis; measurement and analysis of non-response; visual web design (e.g. organization of information on web pages, dynamic paging, multimedia). The working group will further explore influences of innovative technologies and methodologies on measurement (survey question design, improvements in difficult-to-measure key variables in economics and sociology such as personal and household income or occupations, optimal routing scripts, and search tree testing); software developments; innovative ways of recruiting participants (also from rare groups) by using the web; and other new and challenging innovations which could be used for data collection relevant to the social and behavioural sciences.
