Dear All,

We are happily inform you that we plan to form a new TF on mobile research, which is open to all to join. Our first meeting will be in Mannheim. See the description of our TF below (and attached as well):

Task Force 19: Mobile Research (in WG2: Innovations in web-based data collection)
Task Force leader: Robert Pinter
Task force members: Ana Slavec and Arnaud Wijnant. TF is open to all, please join

Aim/Central research question:
Mobile devices, especially smartphones and tablets, become more widespread in Europe hence people use them more often for communication purposes and in all kind of areas of everyday life. These devices affect research as well. First, mobile usage already affects the representativeness of traditional landline samples; mobiles or tablets may be used in Computer-Assisted Personal Interviews (CAPI) instead of laptops; and respondents in online surveys planned for a PC environment may use only mobile devices. Secondly mobile devices can be used independently in mobile internet based surveys, in mobile ethnography, in mobile diary, in location based research or in passive measurement.
Aim of this Task Force is to do systematic work on both abovementioned areas, i.e. to compare mobile research to traditional methods and to investigate it as an independent method. We plan to compare respondent behaviour (e.g. motivation, satisficing) in mobile surveys and web surveys and design real time interventions. At the same time, various methodological aspects of mobile surveys should be researched to improve response rate, design and quality of questionnaires and to summarize findings usefully for developers of mobile survey applications and survey researchers. Last but not least, mobile is also an effective mode for new kind of qualitative research in new areas (ethnographic or diary studies).

Organisation/planning:
At the Mannheim 2013 March meeting we would like to form Mobile Research TF and hold a 1-2 hours working meeting of WebDataNet members and experts who have interest in this topic. We plan to collect research interest of members in regarding mobile research, then try to categorize them and find common interest (e.g. questionnaire design, mobile in qualitative methods, mobile tools in online research, location based research, technological capabilities and limitations etc.).

Planned outcome:
Our first activity in the future would be to prepare a short literature review on mobile research in order to summarize past activities in this field (with bibliography of relevant articles and other sources) and identify main research topics, key institutions and most influential scholars in mobile research method. Deadline for this literature review would be the next meeting in September. After it we plan to prepare articles on various topics based on members’ interests and joint collaboration.

If you are interested in the group, please add your comment to this topic and let us meet in Mannheim at our forming session. (We plan to have an informal meeting as well with potential members on 6 March at 12.15 in GOR at lunch - because few of action members leave before the Webdatanet meeting.)

Thank you:

Robert Pinter PhD

Hi Robert and all in TF19,
welcome to WG 2! I hope you had a good opening meeting in Mannheim.

If possible, it would be very helpful for those interested in your TF, if you could post a brief summary of the meeting here. Also please let the network know via this forum what you may need and what the next steps will be.

Best wishes

Dear All,

please be informed that at my University we have a Mobile Devices Laboratory (MDL) that could be a collaborator in a future project. Here is the MDL's website:
